Ok, stop the madness! Speed is just one factor of many that can cause a crash, but it is solely not the only one. It's like saying "guns kill." No, "people kill." Guns are just the instrument by which murder is committed.

Typically in auto accidents related with speed, there are other factors-like running red lights, driving drunk, waether conditions, weaving in and out of traffic and other sorts of reckless driving behavior, inexperienced drivers (teens), etc-combined with not wearing seatbelts, etc. Speed was not the cause. It contributed to its severity, no doubt-but rarely is it the sole cause.

Speed in and of itself is not evil-if it were, then why do we as a society place such a high value on it? Because of convenience-and, we hate waiting. We are obsessed with speed-in all phases of life. We hate sitting in traffic. We use microwaves to cook-or we get fast food. We blow dry our hair because we can't wait for it to dry naturally. We fly places instead of drive. We drive instead of walk. Auto races, track events, swim trials, etc are based on time and speed. The list goes on and on.

So, what's my point? If the Interstate is clear and traffic is light, weather permitting and the car is in top running condition-the opportunity is there to briefly explore the car's limits. I don't have a problem with it. Let's not go overboard by saying speed is bad, etc. But-if ya get caught at 140 by a cop, it's your fault (no defense there!). ;-)

As far as kids are concerned-is it less responsible to drive up to 140mph in a straight line under the conditions I specified above with kids properly restrained than to drive around in the city with your kids unrestrained in the front passenger seat or on your lap? Where is an accident more likely to occur? The latter scenario seems more prevalent would be more worrisome to me.

It bothers me when I'm in line to drop off my 6yo at school and I see children in cars in front of me unrestrained, playing in the front seat. But that's another beef...
