I have both the 4 and the 6 in a 9-5. Both are fine engines. I find the 6 more pleasurable on the highway. The 4 is a bit more economical. From a service perspective both are just fine. I have had numerous new Saabs in the past almost all with the 4. I had a NG900 with the V6 back in 96 or so and I didn't really thrill over that engine. The V6 in the 9-5 is significantly better. Also I think the auto in the V6 is a bit smoother and down shifts rarely occur or should I say need to occur. Probably the nicest 4 is in my convertible.
So I don't think the choice is super critical in either direction from merely an engine perspective.
The V6 does provide a residual heat function for cold winter days. Depending on how the car will be used it is either a beneficial feature or not. It works almost exactly as the REST function in a new Mercedes.
Next - - the wheels are different on the SE compared to the base. My preference is that the SE wheels look nicer.
And I hate throwing stones into a crowd but I also see alot of base 9-5's out there and not as many SE's. I think much of that is driven by price. Many people lease a car now and I believe they like the cheaper montly payment of the base.
For what it is worth I am getting a new wagon in the summer and I to am torn between the 4 and 6. I love the Aero but I don't know if I want to deal with changing tires for the winter.
Good luck in your decision.
Regards,
Dave Kovacs
