I just finished helping our new Japanese President purchase a CTS for his use. Since GM is our largest customer, we both agreed that an American GM would be best, even though I did let him know that Chairman Lutz drives a 9-5 Aero wagon!

He is straight from Japan, and was fairly shocked at just how bad so many of the GMs are put together. Additionally he is not yet accustomed to the contemporary GM "style". We started with the Buick Park Avenue, which is shockingly shoddy all around for 40k. I liked the STS the best, but at 50k it was a little excessive. He liked nothing, not even the Aurora, which I think is probably the best American GM.

So, we arrived at the CTS. After a couple of weeks of thinking about it, we bought one at invoice (31k) with the basic "luxury" package, which added a good amount of well lacquered walnut here and there. The interior is pretty elegant, actually. The fit is not as good as the 9-5, but it's not all bad either. The center console is a somewhat bulbous and awkward, but the progamming features are in some ways more intelligible than the 9-5 (and in some ways not), and the placement of certain buttons in the CTS is actually better. I've driven the car a number of times. It has a standard GM 3.2 V6 and is solid, but nothing too exciting, though the car is tuned to feel sort of European in its handling. It has both the winter and the sport modes, but neither seem to make much difference to the drive, where as the 9-5 seems markedly different in either. The CTS's outside styling is fairly infectious, especially in a forgiving black w/ tan leather and dark wood trim. Still, it will look dated in a few years, while the 9-5's styling, though in some ways already dated looking, has a true old school European car look, a look which as Mercedes and BMW move more and more away from it will actully be more desirable as years pass.

One last note about the CTS is that the day we picked it up the low fender panel was just the slightest bit off, say, a couple of millimeters, and I thought no one would notice it, or if they did, they'd put it down to the nature of the plastic used to give then CTS its "angry toaster" looks. Of course, my Japanese boss immediately spotted it. He politely said he would wait for it to be repaired to the stunned looks of the many Cadillac-only dealer employees mulling about. At that point we left in my 9-5, which, by the way, none of these Cadillac sales guys seemed to know anything about.
