A 3k change interval is simply nuts--doubly nuts with synthetic. Motor oil is so good these days, and engines burn so cleanly these days, that it's hard to imagine a scenario where the oil is truly contaminated to the point that it's damaging the engine after a mere 3k mi.
Okay, let's say you lived in Hilo and commuted to the top of Mauna Loa to work at the observatory. 3k oil changes would probably be a good idea.
BTW, the 9-5 is by far the easiest Saab I've owned to do an oil change on.
