We have a 03 Aero S/W and a 97Passat TDI.
Considered: Volvo wagon, Jetta wagon DTI and Saab 9-5 Wagon
My 95SET was rear ended and totalled. So time for a replacement. I did not want to go to the new 9-3's and a wagon really seemed to be a better fit for our needs and my hatchback background prevented me from getting into a sedan.
The Volvo wagon had some good features, but there was no coonection at all. Just another vehicle. For the money, there had to be some connection.
I drove a Jetta TDI. I liked the overall design features of the interior. The power was not what I wanted, but I know how the DTI engine can be transformed with a $300 or less ECU mod. The ride was good. The 97 Passat is heavier than the Jetta and the susptension is great. Using Bilstien HD montotube shocks. So back to the Jetta wagon, silver, monsoon, black leather etc. I could have lived with that.
Wee drove a 9-5 Arc Wagon. The bonding was was there. We both really felt that we had to have it. Saab biggots.... well yes I guess, but whats the best choice for a Saab owner who feel that they can't live with anthing else. Both were automatics avail for test. When on throttle the Saab just got on boost and got about its business. The Volvo downshifted and rev'd up a lot and made a lot of fuss about speedin up. The Saab just got faster and seemed to do so effortlessly. So we orderd the Saab Aero the next week, 5 spd. We had not driven one, but we were comfortable with the extrapolation. The main issue, was, were we able to find a way to finace the Saab in a sane fashion. We had just dug a whole with replacing the exterior siding and windows. So we just sold the eldest child and got the Saab :)
I was able to get a GM suppier discount and a $500 loyalty on top of that and a reasonable insurance settlement (as such things go). So the Saab was still major money than the Jetta DTI wagon.
The Jetta wagon was on the slate because of the DTI diesel. We did not look at the Passat wagon to a great degree.
I went for the Aero 5 spd for the 4 cylinder engine which I know well, and the better MPG's. The better brakes, wheels, tire and brakes appealed to me as a decent end point, after spending my life making the NG900 what is should have been out of the box! Going from the 95SET to the 9-5 Aero SW was very easy insurance wise. I was in disbelief about how little the increase in premiums was.
I do feel that the VW's do present a great package and are very much something that deserves consideration. Some of their vehicles are very attactive visually as well! (excluding the bug)
