Rear Brake question

This week-end I will probably be installing new rotors and pads all around, and replacing the brake fluid (didn't do it at 60,000 miles like I should have).
My W.I.S. includes two sets of instructions for rear brakes, fixed caliper and floating caliper. I assume the car has one each? Anyone know why?
I was also shocked at the small size of the rear pads. I opened the box expecting to see two pads for onnly one wheel and there were four, enough for the whole car! I've seen larger postage stamps, almost.
