On my car the all the lights go out only if the light switch is turned off or if the ignition switch is turned of with the light switch at "main beam". Turning off the ignition would give you the symptoms you describe. Clearly you didn't "nudge" the key because the lights would have come on again and the engine would have started when you tried.

So I would go for a faulty ignition switch or a fault in the wiring from it, up to and including the ECU.

But definitely not the DI unit.
