Hello Catherine,
DI stands for Direct Ignition, and basically replaces the good old distributor, which have pretty well disappeared on modern cars. Without going too deeply into the technical aspects, the DI sends the current to the spark plugs which ignite the vaporised gas in the combustion chamber producing an explosion which sends the piston down the cylinder which turns the crank which drives the gears in the transmission which transfer the power to the drive wheels through two drive shafts.
Unfortunately, the DI system used by Saab, although very efficient , has not proved to be bullet-proof. From what we can observe, it is by no means worst than others, but that is of no comfort when your car dies on you, specially in conditions as you lived. When I suffered a DI failure on my car I was lucky to be approaching my parking space at home, but immediately I thought of circumstances where I would have been in trouble if it had happened then. (I cross a very busy high speed bridge twice every day). This made me conclude that the problem should be treated as a safety issue and not a mere «sporadic occurrence». Some on this board agreed while others smeared. It all depends where your priorities are I guess. I know where mine are; one of the reasons we bought our Saab was to offer the best protection possible to our young daughter, now 3 years old.
In any case, it would be very interesting to know if it is really your DI that has failed because we know it has been improved and the fact that your lights went off creates a doubt. Could you please ask your dealer to confirm your DI was toasted and that they are sure it was the culprit. When you finally got the car going again, did it seem to drive normally?
I know it is hard but I hope you can regain trust in your car. I assure you, Saabs are not the only cars to have these problems. VW /Audi have just gone through a MASSIVE recall campaign to replace faulty coil packs, their version of the DI.
