You can drain out the old and put in the new. If the engine is older, or oil changes haven't been religious, you might want to use an engine flush (such as made by AMSOIL or BG). The synthetic will clean the inside of the engine, and if there is a lot of crud, it may fill up the oil filter prematurely. If this happens, you would probably notice an increase in oil consumption--change the filter and top off. If the oil gets really nasty looking after 3-5,ooo miles, drain the first batch early.
My 1988 9000T was changed to AMSOIL at 87,000 at the shop before I bought it. No flush--no problem. Ran it 10,000 miles (changed filter at 5,000 and had almost no oil consumption.
