CV Joint failure update

Update on the CV Joint failure. Dealer says needs to replace entire axle shaft because of the way the CV Joint broke off. Extended warranty (not GM) is paying for rebuilding unit only as a new one is prohibitively expensive (rebuilting costs approx $300 Cdn versus $2000+ CDN for replacement not including labour).
Any comments on a rebuilding the failed part?
I am still baffled how a major part like this can fail without warning. Dealer had no explanation, as they have never seen this type of failure.
Thanks for your comments....
