2 grand for a new half-shaft?

I must admit I haven't replaced one on a 9-5- but that sounds like an outrageous price to me! Last time I had bad CV joint it was on a Honda and the new (aftermarket, not Honda) half shaft was about $150+ my time to install it (a couple of hours)
How would they rebuild it? Save the CV joints and replace the shaft (or the other way around? I'm not sure which part broke) Either way- I can't image one component being 15% of the entire assembly (seems too low) and the labour time would be much higher because not only will they have to remove and install the old one (all that would be required to simply replace the unit) but they will have to rebuild the part once it comes off rather than disposing of it.
Let us know how this works out...
