Breaking in the engine.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Break-in Period, Matt G, Thu, 10 Apr 2003 18:50:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In my experience, I've never had a warranty claim or a wear issue with inadequate break-in as the cause. I have experienced significant performance advantages to a less than gentle break-in. Break-in recommendations seem to expire around 1,000 miles, but true break-in seems to take 5,000-10,000 miles when auto magazines report a significant increase in performance. I personally believe modern engines need significantly less break in with their precision tolerances, tough materials and synthetic oil. Today's engine is the equivilant of a racing engine 20 years ago, 250hp from 2.3 liters! And I'm perfectly comfortable with a 10k first oil change. Modern oils and filters do their job very well. Of course if you do break your engine in hard or are a hard driver or meet any of the other requirements for "severe" service, then perhaps a 5k change, even with synthetic or semi-synthetic might be appropriate.
Of course my bread is buttered by you wearing out your car prematurely, but proper maintenance seems to be more important than any particular break-in procedure.
Follow the manufactures recommendations ;-) I say, but if you don't I don't think you'll ever have anything to worry about, at least not in my experience.
