Block heater was standard on our 01. When using it, the engine does not make the horrible noises, as if crying for mercy, associated with very cold starts. I read that Saab considers the block heater as an environmental issue, because it allows the engine to attain it’s normal running temperature quicker, and as a lot of you might know, a warm engine pollutes less. In my mind, there is no doubt that using a block heater reduces engine wear during extreme cold starts. When you start an engine with oil thicker than molasses, there must be metal-to-metal contact until the oil is warm enough to flow properly. Full synthetic oil is said to reduces this risk.
