SAAB does mention the ACEA A3 spec in the U.S. owner's manual for my '02 Aero but falls short of requiring it. Seems they are allowing a minimum of semi-synthetic API SL spec oil, which is vague. Everything on the shelf at WalMart meets API SL spec, and any ol' semi-synthetic might be only 10% synthetic! There are no rules governing what constitues a "semi-synthetic" oil. Having said that, SAAB's semi-synth 5W-30 (what the dealer is supposed to use) seems to be a very good oil.
Turbo engines really beat up engine oil, so it's a good idea to use the best oil you can find. Top choice is a fully (and real, group IV/V) synthetic ACEA A3-rated oil such as Mobil 1 0W-40 or 15W-40, or the new made-in-Germany "European formula" Castrol 0W-30.
Almost as good are the A5-rated oils such as M1 0W-30, 5W-30, or 10W-30.
