Ok, I was a bit quick. I was referring to the 0W part of the equation, it is lower than needed in an Arizona summer but likely won't hurt anything when using a full synthetic oil (ok, I though I was responding to another thread about what to use in Arizona). As to the other end, the 40, that is probably a good oil to use in hot summer areas such as the American Southwest. Would a 30 weight work just fine? I suspect as that is what Saab recommends, it would also be ok. There are tradeoffs of course, the 40 weight would provide more protection against engine wear but it would likely also, because it is thicker, make a slight (probably unnoticable) dent in fuel milage. From what has been posted on the board about oils, I have decided to stick with A3/B3 rated oils, but it also appears from what I have read in some of the other oil posts today that other varieties of Mobil 1 are now at A3/B3 standards. Would a Mobil 1 or other good 10W-30 or 5W-30 synthetic oil rated A1/B1 or A3/B3 be good in a hot climate too? Saab seems to think so and I have no reason to doubt them.
As to A3/B3 oil being required, it isn't by Saab. As to whether A1/B1 oils are satisfactory, sure again as they meet Saab recommendations. But from what I have heard, the A3/B3 oils are better and don't appear to be any more expensive. So I will stick with them as long as I have also decided to use synthetic oils albeit synthetics are more expense that synthetic blends or dyno oil.
