Dumb driver that I am... at 26K I need pads and rotors. I know that I probably ride the brakes too much (it's an automatic), but I have never had a problem like this before. I think it has a lot to do where I live: On the side of a mountain, basically. To leave my house and get to surrounding areas, I am up and down steep hills (similar to that of San Francisco, but not quite as steep). I only drive 15 miles round trip a day to/from work, but a greater portion of those miles is riding on the brake because of the hills.

Okay, here's where my ignorance shines: Can I drop the gear to 3rd or something on an automatic, or will that trash the engine? I have only used the lower gears during bad weather, but obviously I cannot keep driving like the way I am.

My car is leased, one year to go, and I wasn't anticipating a brake job before the end, but here I am... I started to notice a problem a few weeks ago when I was finally able to roll down the windows and heard the squeaks, then the *grind* feeling started.

I always hate posting here because I feel like such an idiot, but you people are always so helpful!
