The Saabs of the last few years do wear out brakes fast. Even for flat landers. That is mostly the fault of the pads. You can save a bundle with aftermarket pads and rotors. Many install these themselves. If you get the dealer installing Saab parts, this will be quite expensive.
With the Aero's there are not any aftermarket rotors. So many install EBC pads when the vehicle is new to prolong the life of the rotors.
Yes you can use a lower gear with your automatic. Not doing this on bigger moutain slopes can get the brakes so hot that loss of life is a possible outcome. Does the owners manual discuss this?
