a 9-5 wagon then?
Glad to hear your SAAB did well in the snow!
The current BMW 5-series is a bit cramped, with less room than the 9-5... you might also consider the BMW 5-series wagon. But I think they look a bit strange, while the 9-5 wagon is beautiful, and again, more spacious.
With the Bimmer you'll definitely need snow tires in the winter if you get the V8 540i (a lot of torque to the rear wheels), or any 5-series with the sport suspension (those come with summer-only sport tires).
As I understand it, the 528i/530i (six-cylinder) is the best-balanced of the 5-series line, because they're less nose-heavy, and they have rack-and-pinion steering instead of the vague recirculating-ball setup found in the 540i.
The BMW 5 series is a fine automobile but I do enjoy driving the 9-5 more!
Especially on long trips, I find the 9-5 to be more comfy.
Jason
ps- below is a picture taken by my brother who came upon an unfortunate 5-series this past winter, whose owner was attempting to drive on the icy Long Island Expressway on summer-only sport tires! big no-no..
