Are you sure you're not me from the alternative universe? I had to make the same choice last year, only I was torn between the 2000 Max and the 1999 9-5 -- to replace my 1998 Max GLE (which I was very happy with by the time).
Based on the fact I'm still on this board, you can easily guess what my decision was ;), and I do not regret it, despite a number of problems I had. But my car was already out of warranty, and you're getting bumper to bumper coverage. Also, MY 2000 is more reliable than mine.
Cost-wise, the Saab turned out to be cheaper. First of all, the 9-5 ended up a couple of thousands less than the Max I was looking at. Second, the insurance quote was 30% less. And third, I now spend less on gas than I did before -- both cars are "premium recommended" according to the manual, but Saab gets better mileage.
I can go on and on for hours. I am still a fan of Maximas, but they are a different class of cars. It really looks at first that these cars are pretty close to each other -- they are about the same size, similar engine specs, similar price... but in reality the Saab is much more refined in just about everything, and the Max just cannot match it in a lot of areas. I know Nissan is trying to push the Max/I30/I35 upscale for quite some time, but they are not there yet.
