It's always hard to predict individual performance based on group averages such as Consumer Reports reliability data. But I will add my anecdotal advice anyway.

Our first Saab was a '89 9000T, which we drove into the ground. (It took 11 years and >200,000 miles.) The first six or seven years and 140,000 miles were pretty trouble free, aside from replacing several alloy wheels and V-rated tires after they were destroyed on the potholed roads of Connecticut. By year 8 we started to lose some of the LEDs in the diplays and the passenger seat's power reclining stopped functioning properly. However, it was only towards the end (the last year) that we finally faced major repairs: replacement of air conditioning system, steering rack, and speedometer as well as other problems that were going to be more than US$5000 to fix. Despite over 200,000 miles, we never had trouble with the engine or the transmission.

We were happy enough with the 9000T that we then leased a 2000 9-5. We will be turning it in next week at the end of its lease after 3 absolutely trouble-free years of driving. Aside for oil changes and scheduled maintenance, we have had no trips to the dealer. After trying out several European and Japanese alternatives (but not a Maxima) we're leasing another 9-5 (same colour even).

My conclusion is that Consumer Reports is right, the 9-5 is an unusually trouble-free car. Add this to the fact that the 9-5 is a clear step up from a Maxima and I think that it's an easy vote for the Saab.
