Consider the 4cyl wagon, and a lower purchase price.

There is some discussion about which engine is better, the Saab turbo 4, or 6. Although there seems to be a lot of satisfaction with the 6 now, I'd still lean heavily toward the 4. Roughly the same power, and the 4 has proven itself a very strong, reliable engine. You will get a bit better milage, and I'm guessing less maintainence.

Also there are a lot of 2000s coming off lease, so the price has dropped dramatically in the past month or two. You should be able to get a nice 2000 for around $18k. Try a search on cars.com.

Family on the way? Think wagon. You are really going to apreciate the extra storage space for stroller, diaper bag, extra luggage, folding playpen, and heaven knows what else you will be carrying around. Sooner than you think you will also be hauling other kids, bicycles, etc. There is no loss in handling or anything else with the 9-5 wagon according to many of the posts on this board. I really like the styling too, though that is a personal view. Expect to pay a bit more for the wagon.

You should have no problem running reg gas except on the Aero, which will also cost more up front.

The warranty is a nice coverage and probably worth $1000-2000 if you are nearing the end of the factory warranty.

Before you buy, get a good Saab mechanic to inspect the car stem to stern. The $100 or so you spend for a thorough inspection can pay off big time. Also try to use a very good Saab mechanic for repairs. These cars are unique and benefit greatly from specialized repair.

You can save yourself a lot of bucks by doing easy stuff yourself. Plugs, oil, radiator fluid, etc are easy and can save a lot on routine maintenence. If you are more mechanically inclined, you could do a $600 brake job for $200 and an afternoon. Lots of stuff like this is not too hard, and can make owning a Saab downright reasonable. Follow this board for advise.

I'm on my 4th & 5th Saabs over a 25yr time frame. I like them....

Most importantly, have fun with that new baby! If your first, your life is about to change dramatically. Spend the time and energy on your kid, it is the best investment you can make.
