Castrol syntec 5W50 and 10W40, syntec blend 10W-40
Valvoline Synpower 5W40 and Durablend 10W-40
Amsoil 10W40 and 5W30 "heavy duty diesel oil"

These are among the widely available (Amsoil from local distributors) synthetic blend and synthetic oils that meed Saab's general recommendation for viscosity grade and ACEA rating.

I too am surprised that Saab uses lighter oil here for their "included maintenance" program. The reason may be better fuel economy (Since they provide oil free, it may factor into the EPA fuel economy/emissions testing that they have to use what they provide). It may also be that the lighter oil is better able to tolerate too-long-between-changes without gumming up the works. It may be (as suggested by some) that the primary recommendation takes into account Autobahn speeds which most of us aren't able to exploit here. Whatever the reason, my attitude and recommendation is ACEA A3/B3 is the primary recommendation and it is readily available at reasonable prices. So why not use it?

When I take my car to the dealer for it's "free" maintenance, the 5W30 blend comes home with me in bottles for use in Mrs. G's Oldsmobile.
