The reason you need an original is that the key code tells Saab how to cut the key for your ignition and lock cylinders. But to actually start the car, the chip in the key (also the fob) needs to talk to the computer and verify that it's a valid key. If you want to add a new valid key to the car, you need at least one valid key, and all keys need to be present at the same time for coding. Basically you're telling the car, here's my key, and these two new ones are the only valid ones. This way a thief can't go to a dealer with your VIN, get a key made, and steal your car (which has been a problem at my office parking lot). Also, if you lose a key, you can get a new one made, and when you code the old + new key, the lost old one won't work any more.
I believe (but I'm not sure) that the key-chip and fob-code work the same, but are separate. So if you have keys that work now, you could add new keys, but without an existing fob that's coded to the car, you can't add a new fob. You would need to replace the security computer with a "fresh" one to add an OEM remote.
