Oh, okay now I'm starting to get it.
Let me reiterate my understanding (feel free to correct)
The "key code" for my keys list on my maintenance history, 2letters+4numbers, just tells the dealer the mechanical 'laser' cut of my key and nothing else. This code has nothing to do with the computer chip inside the key.
The computer chip code isn't recorded anywhere so I always need to have at least one original key (I have two originals right now) if I ever need to have a new key cut. Basically, I need to have both the 'key-code' for the mechanic cut, and one of my original OEM keys to copy the chip. If I ever lose both my original OEM keys I'll have to have the entire security system reprogrammed which is not cheap.
I called my Saab dealership and spoke to the parts department and asked for a quote to get an all-in-one key for my '00 Aero and I was told it wasn't possible. I was surprised given this thread, so I reiterated my request very clearly and he told me that my car has a different system than newer cars and I can use their all-in-one key/fob. I also asked if there are any after-market keys, and he replied 'no'. What gives, does he know what he's talking about it?
Thanks,
Kevin
