Well, from the oil analyses I've seen, the SAAB turbos tend to shear down an oil more rapidly than normally aspirated cars (even fully synthetic oil)
Many modern Honda engines (non-turbo) have these "high" piston rings you speak of, with compression ratios greater than 10:1, and they use thin 5W-20 dino oil with no problem.
I would never use 5W-20 dino oil in a turbo car!
The SAAB-branded semi-syn 5W-30, arguably a better oil than 5W-20 dino, is proving insufficient in 9-5 turbos.
Besides the heat, I think you have to take into consideration the extremely high rotational speed of the turbo, around 150,000 rpm.
Amsoil promotes very long oil change intervals (as high as 25K) when using their oil in normally aspirated engines, but not for turbo cars, and probably for good reason.
