The synthetic oils in turbo diesels get subjected to a lot of oil analysis. And loss of visocity never seems to be an issue. Many are running bypass filters and changing their oil once a year. So I can't see that the Saab engines would be harder on the oil than a turbo diesel. The only mechanical difference that is obvious is the timing chains VS timing belts.
Perhaps the synthetic oils don't suffer like dyno oils. Do you know if your source of info pertains to dyno or synthetic? Synthetics do have less VII's to shear down.
