I agree, all 9-5s & all 9-3s prior to the '03 SS should NOT go more than 5k mi on the Saab OE 5W-30 syn blend. As a matter of fact, I've suggested only going 4k mi on the "free" changes & then using M1 0W-40 or 15W-50 for the next 6k mi (until the next "free" change), as the M1 will undoubtedly be protecting better at that point. Better yet, I'd suggest people start doing what both of us have done, & ask the dealer to hand over the oil & filter for use at home. That way, the Saab oil can be used in a non-turbo, & the turbo can get only full syn (done by the owner).
But to suggest that the new 9-3SS needs its intervals cut in half to eliminate sludge, when the sump has been increased from 4L (4.2qt) to 6L (6.3qt) & the oil has been upgraded from an ACEA A1 syn blend to an ACEA A5 full syn, is unnecessary. Do I think this new oil is PROTECTING as well as M1 0W-40 or 15W-50? No, I don't. But I also don't think it's creating any sludge.
