I am just not a fan of automatics. As for the 9-5 auto, while others will likely disagree, I don't like the "manual" automatic -- The steering wheel only shifters and the fact that if you redline it there is a rough shift to the next gear just don't do it in terms of excitement. I do however think the 5 speed auto simply placed in "D" with sport mode on is one of the finest shifting automatics I have ever driven.
All that said when I bought my 02 aero I got a manual and never thought twice about it. I now have a 99 Viggen and appreciate that the 9-5's shifter and clutch are much nicer than the 9-3. When I had both the Viggen and the aero and I would switch cars the aero clutch was so light I would just bat it to the floor expecting much more resistance. I actually dislike the Viggen in traffic since the clutch is so heavy, but the 9-5 is just fine. Since I have been driving a manual as a daily driver for 15 years I don't even think about it.
So I will vote manual. If you are really a die hard manual driver I would think it will be hard to go to the auto. What I would recommend is the 24 hour test drive with an auto aero and see if you can live with it. Be sure to push the limits of the manual auto shift capabilities. Maybe you will like it, but I didn't, and I had a month of a loaner to test it out.
Good luck -- sounds like a heck of a car -- the steel grey is a very nice color are you going to get the black interior??? Now that would be excellent!! That black interior option makes me dream of another aero -- Maybe late next year once the Viggen has worn me out;)
