As mentioned in another post, first gear can seem at bit low. But that, to me, is an advantage. I drive a '99lpt sedan and an '01lpt wagon, and compared with other sticks I have owned/driven in the past, the Saab's is much more versatile. You can practically 'drive' these cars in first gear at slower than walking speeds! So unless you've actually come to a complete stop, there's no need for constant clutching. Even 2nd can be driven suprisingly slow too. Accelerating from this slow crawl is also very smooth, not jumpy at all. Besides, the clutch isn't that heavy anyway.
Also, other than the fun and safety advantages already mentioned, if your starter fails or the battery dies and nobody is around with cables to help out...well you get the picture. Advantage stick.
Ultimately, you have to be comfortable with your decision, so whichever one you choose, happy Saabing!
