First I pay 3 or 4 years of lease payments, then I get a 4 or 5 year loan to purchase the car. That's a lot of payments.
You have to take an educated guess going into a lease whether you think you might want to keep it. If so, I'd suggest you suck it up and get a loan right from the start for 4 or 5 or 6 years. And remember that there's a lot of gamesmanship (or, if you like, educating guessing) about the residual. No one really knows the value of a car in 4 years in today's economy; most leasors with leases coming due guessed way too high because so many cars are flooding the market. The smart ones either bought residual insurance or negotiate with the people who already have the car (i.e., the leasee).
