You don't say if the engine is the I-4 or the V-6, but assuming it is the I-4, these engines are pretty bulletproof. The same design has been used in the 9000 series since the late 80s, and there are numerous cars going 300K or more miles without a hitch. I guess you got a bad one.
My neighbor's Mercedes E320 wagon's transmission failed at 52K miles, also just out of warranty. She screamed and kicked so much that MB picked up the entire $5400 repair cost.
I would suggest writing Saab USA, Saab Corporate in Sweden, and your dealer a letter explaining your long years of Saab ownership and your disappointment at this failure. Say that you expect Saab to pick up the cost of the repair, that the engine should last many more miles than that, and that they'll lose a valuable customer if they don't fork over the cost. You might get a good settlement (or "goodwill $").
Sorry for your misfortune, but I don't believe this is a defect in the engine, or a fault in the oil pump pick up screen. The extended service intervals are probably more at fault than anything. Just change the oil every 6K or so and you should be fine.
If you want to get rid of deposits in the engine (sludge), I've used Risoline with good results (put it in, drive 200 miles, change the oil).
