I assume that your car is a 4 cylinder variant. These engines are beginning to fail because of hard carbon like deposits forming in the engine and clogging the oil pump pickup screen. This seems to usually be caused by long oil change intervals and or poor crankcase venting combined with too fine a screen on the oil pump pickup.
I honestly don't know how much responsibility Saab is going to end up admitting to but they have improved breathing in 03 and they may have changed oil formulas as well.
I would be interested in hearing your oil change history as well as the brand of oil used.
Understand how Saab is going to react to this. If these engines are going to begin failing in the numbers that I think they will Saab will want to stonewall as much as possible in order to avoid an avalanche of claims. But if you can verify oil changes at 5k miles you will probably go farther, 10k still OK and anything beyond that you will probably be out of luck. This is also a situation where servicing at the dealer can help to build alot of loyalty.
For reference I think a rebuilt short block(Block crank pistons etc is about$3500 from Saab) leaving you in about the same $5,000 range but with some warranty.
If you do have the engine replaced be sure to have them remove the oil pan and replace the pickup screen with some coarser material(we use the perforated metal from the inside of a 9000 air filter) This will help you prevent a repeat performance. There are alot of lease return vehicles out there and there and by and large their maintenance records are not impressive.
