I've tried both auto mode and setting the fan speed to get out of auto mode. In auto the fan speed will ramp up to full speed once the engine starts warming enough to heat the air and it will stay on high speed until the temp sensor thinks it is warm enough by which time I am way overheated. Setting the fan speed to 2 or 3 helps some because it isn't blowing as hard at me but the behavior is still more or less the same, I still feel overheated. Same goes for adjusting where the air is going... No matter what you do the system will blow hot air from whatever vents you specify until it thinks the cabin has warmed up enough. At that point the air temp coming out of the vents will be reduced to close to the temp you have asked for and everything gets more comfortable. I also typically set the temp at 58 deg at startup to try to reduce the overheating but even that doesn't change things much. After the system settles down I'm usually pretty comfortable after boosting the setpoint up to around 66 deg. in the winter. As I mentioned before despite trying varous settings I haven't yet found a way to avoid the initial overheating.
