Again, failure of most other engine parts will also stop the engine. If you want an engine that won't fail once in 300k miles, it would make cars insanely expensive. The risk of failure without warning is low, also for the DI.
As for your statement: "reduce a car to an uncontrollable hunk of metal". Do you mean, "because I would panic and loose control of the car"?
Steering and braking is still working even if the engine is shut down. Most people have experienced a stalling car whilst moving, it's certainly not unique for Saab. You can see stalled cars in traffic everyday, and it's all makes of cars.
The risk of DI failing without warning AND leading to an accident is in the league of getting struck by lightning. Like many other risks it is there, but not worth worrying about. I haven't heard of anyone experiencing the former yet. If it was a such a problem many people here try to make it, I'm sure we would have heard of it happening with the thousands of people using Saabnet. Especially considering the litigious society of the States.
