Hi Loren,
It may seem like it takes forever to brake on snow or ice when the ABS kicks in. I've also read that on loose snow or gravel, a person can reduce distances compared to ABS. I also agree with the other posts about the ability to steer being possibly more important than a few feet of braking in most instances. But the one thing you may be overlooking is that your first stop may have been in icier conditions than the second. It's possible that you would have taken longer to stop without ABS, but it seemed like it took forever with ABS. The second stop may have been on a snowier road.
That being said, I would never buy a car without ABS again.
