I think I recall reading on one of the tire sites for all season tires:
- 4/32 min tread depth for safety in rain
- 6/32 " " " for decent traction in snow
Now, my oem michelins got me to 32k (horrible noise last 10k), then were replaced by Yoko Avid H4, which evaporated in less than 23k. I do like to run all season tires here in Colorado, and I do like to replace the tire before 2/32 .
So I bought a set of Pirelli P3000, T speed, milage rated at 85K. I'd like to see 50 to 55 k out of these tires. So far (22K) handling is acceptable, treadwear looks good, not noisy, and to my surprise traction in snow has been very good.
Some folks will present that a long life hard compound tire will affect stopping distance, true, but many that buy high performance tire will run the tire down below 2/32, because as you point out above, that 8/32 can go pretty fast on soft compound, and you do need sufficient tread to prevent hydroplaning in the rain. More compromises, but I prefer the attribute of control over decreased stopping distance. And I will chuck the tires at 4/32 tread depth.
No way I want to be in the biz of retiring every 25 to 30k.
