I replaced the original front pads on his last car at 111K, and still had minor (yes very minor) pad life left. It hadn't hit the backing plates, though.
But my hunch is that even with the stick, neither of us are big tailgater's and anticipate traffic conditions, which means less braking frequency, and less severe braking. I can't say I drive particularly slowly, but I do try to drive within the limits of conditions.
I can't say much positive about the "crappy Saab tranmission", though. I still prefer it to an automatic, but the only standard I've driven thats worse was the '70 ford 3speed on the column and 200K on it. That transmission was better than the 9-5, but I'm convinced the battered shift linkage served as the forebear to Saab's design ;-) I'm trying to decide if I'd be better to get a newer tranny with the beefier synchro's from a boneyard or just doing the rebuild on mine. Since it still shifts, and the $$$ are tight, I'll just cope for now.
(But WHY can't I get the stage II speedparts ecu, honey?)
FWIW, I did the rotors and EBC pads at 110K. I did the rears, too, but should have waited, as they didn't need it.
With the EBC's, after 10k, I have less dust, but also the rotor shimmy that Lou's talking about, although it varies from mildly annoying to really f*cking obnoxious depending on the day, temperature, and a few other variables I haven't figured out.
