I opened up a couple of PL10241 filters, and quit when I got a knuckle laided open...
The pleats are very dense in this filter. There is a very large area of filter media. With a synthetic oil, I can't see where there would be a generation of enough solids to challenge the filter capacity of this filter.
As for cooling, there already is a thermostatically controlled oil cooler. So the contribution of the added few inches of filter can is insignificant. Pressure drop across the media with hot oil should not be significant unless there is something very wrong already. And such pressure drop is limited by the oil filter's internal relief valve. That valve will probably rarely open, even in the cold, for folks running [0|5]W[30|40] oil.
