A depth media bypass filter is needed to really make any significant improvement over the current arrangement. The PL10241 et al are very good for full flow filters. I would really like to set up a bypass filter, but space claim is problem. And these need to be located and oriented to allow for changing this added filter without making a huge mess. I would go for the ones that use rolls of TP. Inexpensive and effective. I have not seen folks put a pressure guage on these. But the temperature of the oil hoses and fittings on the filter can indicate if the flow is deminished from the filter media getting loaded up. With a good synthetic oil the filter will not have much work to do. On a diesel engine, the media picks up a lot of soot and thats a different story. A TP bypass filter on a Saab with M1 oil could be changed once a year. The oil change intervals can be greatly extened, as the oil is not getting loaded with wear metals. Some will change the TP and with the make up oil, rarely drain the sump, as the makeup oil replentishes the oil addatives. The TP element will also trap water. But routine oil changes are easy and sufficient for the engine to last as long as the chassis. Bypass filters only make sense for folks who are going to keep a vehilce for a long time and many miles.
