It can't hurt, and the cost is probably the same, so one has in one sense a better value, but probably no real benefit. With Volvo's one used to be able to mount a huge filter and get around 1 US quart higher oil capacity which probably was of some value.
With crappy filters with low pleat density, a larger filter might make a real difference.
I went through the purolator filter specs and could not find a larger filter with the same specs that had the same pressure relief settings... that I could find stocked somewhere local.
