Checking for sludge...

I changed my oil today thanks to those horrible pics on the previous posts.
At 34,000 miles, and having never used dino oil except Saab synth blend, I was still worried.
After all, I was using the much maligned Castrol 5W-50 every 6-8k, and wondered if I had made a huge error.
After draining the oil, I slid a straw in to the bottom of the oil pan, and rammed it along the bottom to full length (7-8 inches) 12 to 15 times. I even got it under the screen.
Results were that there was no sludge whatsoever, only a tiny bit of darker crud at the tip...hardly enough to see.
Overall color was similar to the color of the drained oil.
Although I live in the cold of WI, I drive 40 miles to work. Maybe this helps? But I have to believe that the oil I used was adequate to the task.
I seems to me that this would not be out of the question when buying a used car. Any owner refusing a free oil change would be showing his hand
