I got a 3' flex fiber scope for $200+ something. I had a peak in a spark plug hole on the 9-5, hard to make anything out. I think that you would see damage, but when everthing is uniform its not so easy. I have not had it in the sump. It might be good for getting down in the timing cover.
I have used it on a couple of home projects. It is good to see inside of a wall with a small hole to see whats there, before you start busting/cutting wall board. I put in an over the range microwave and vented the exhaust up through the attic. I had to go through the bottom of the cabinet above as well as the top and through 2 layers before getting to the attic*. I could see that there was no heat ducts or wires in the way and that the alignment with the bulkhead framing and joists in the attic allowed a clear route for the 3.25x10" duct.
*Cutting a hole through 4 layers and having them all line up and be vertical is not too easy.
