You're right. They do come out as a unit. But once the assembly is removed, it must be disassembled so the housing and bushings can be reassembled with the new damper and/or springs.
There's a top nut fastened to the strut shaft that looks like it could be tough ot remove. If I understand correctly, if it's rusted on, then no amount of grip on that shaft will hold it so that the nut can be unscrewed.
The WIS shows a special purpose tool that somehow holds it whilst the top-nut can be removed. I'm wondering whether a more generally available tool can be purchased because I'm planning to replace dampers on my '99 this week.
