There are special tools avilable to remove Bayonet Mount shocks such as the 9-5 rears, but usually found on front suspensions. Believe it or not, I actualy have one of these - but the piecess will not fit the nut size and shaft configuration on the rear shocks! As NickH originally posted, there is a bewildering array of non-typical bolt sizes used with these rear shocks.
The rear shocks are gas charged. This causes them to instantly grow in length when you remove the bottom bolt. You must compress the shock and shorten it reinstall them in the car. Performance shocks intended for shorter & stiffer springs are probably a tad shorter initially giving the installer less grief than the standard shocks during re-installation.
I completely agree with using a wire brush to clean off the threads. I certainly wish I had done this. I have a Dremel with small abrasive wheels and a propane torch which I could have used to heat and expand the nut, didn't think of using either of these. I spent three hours fighting with the first rear shock, the last 2 hours struggling to get the damaged but servicable unit back in the car.
I became so frustrated while attempting to remove the shock from the holder that I just said "to heck with all this." I just put it back together so I could get the car in to someone with a larger array of tools. The one unsettling comment from my independent mechanic is that they have not yet performed this service on any 9-5! They were surprise I even neede it done.
