I'm no fan of SUVs, but there is a market still exists for these monstrosities.
In my small 32 house subdivision, I'm the only one who does not own a SUV or truck of some type. But most of my neighbors have boats and go fishing in the Gulf on the weekends-so, towing big boats with cars just won't cut it. I don't have a boat, so it's no big deal for me.
But if you're a sport or fishing boat owner, a truck or large SUV is the only way to go.
Another reason is the high ground clearance it affords when you live in a flood prone area like New Orleans. We just had a torrential downpour yesterday that flooded many streets and a few neighborhoods in and around the NO area. Having an SUV reduces your likelyhood of being trapped in rising waters that would easily drown a car.
My only problem with SAAB's attempt at an SUV is that it is only a 5 passenger vehicle, and not a 7 passenger vehicle, like a Land Cruiser, Navigator, etc.
I'd say a lot of people buy these large utes because minivans are so uncool and the larger utes can also hold 7 to 8 people. So, you can take your 4 or 5 family members and a couple of their friends or grandparents (fill in your need here) with you to dinner, a movie, or another type of family outing.
We have a SAAB 9-5 wagon now-but let's say my wife and I decide to have more kids (we have 2 now). If we had another, the wagon (which we love) would be too small for three sets of carseats in the back. We'd either have to get a minivan (no way) or an SUV. Reluctantly, I'd go with an SUV.
If had made a 3rd row seat option for the wagon, they would be stealing more sales from Volvo. But that's another rant...I digress....
IN the end, people buy what they buy for no other reasons but their own. Hopefully, the pendulum will swing back and SUVs will no longer be the so popular.
One can only hope!
