I wouldn't be afraid of any 9-5 model year 2000 or later. You are looking for a very recent model with manual transmission -- you may have trouble finding one, as the buyer of such a vehicle would likely be described as "enthusiast" and may not yet be ready to give it up. After all, a 2002 Aero is barely broken in.
Shifting is fun. Our 9-5 is my wife's car; manual tranny out of the question. I must say I admire the automatic transmission; it shifts almost nearly perfectly. I would not turn down a good deal on an Aero just because it had the auto box. Drive it first.
What else is on your short list? Many of us drive other cars and can somewhat compare reliability records. In the price range of a 9-5 especially slightly used, I think nothing is as roomy, fast and fuel efficient. I have also heard that recent Audis have had problems, and I did not even consider an Audi when looking for a car, although when they are in good running order, they are sweet. I would love to drive an A6 with the 2.7T, but if I did, you bet I would lease it, not buy it. 9-5, on the other hand, is a good car to buy and keep.
