If there is a private incentive, why would you feel you are entitled to it? It is up to the DEALER to offer a DEALER incentive or DEALER cash to the customer. If every dealer is giving it away, you would be a fool to not do the same. This is where the market comes into play. Incentives have no impact on what the dealership paid for a car. When a car comes into a dealerships inventory, it is purchased at invoice price and interest in paid on that amount in the floorplan. You do not get a floorplan break beacuase of holdback or dealer cash. In a case such as your purchase, it was mutually beneficial for the aged unit to be moved to you at a low price and it does not sound like you were an unpleasant customer to deal with. When I purchased my Aero it was done so in the same way. There was an aged unit in inventory and I was offered a very low firm price which I accepted. There was a doc fee which I did not know about before I agreed to purchase but I was not suprised and it was not unreasonable based on every other dealer's doc fee. There were no issues.
"How would you like to send your wife or daughter in with $42000 to deal with one of your colleagues?"
My wife would be offended by this comment and would do just fine buying a car if I was not there with her. Why wouldn't she?
I have no problem with customers shopping, being educated, visiting other dealers or researching incentives. It makes my job much easier when they are informed. I have problems with customers who lie in order to get the price dropped or who get defensive and offended if you try to sell the vehicle at market value as if you are a scammer for doing so....or with those who call fees which every dealer charges to every customer "junk fees" and who expect discounts off the price to compensate for these fees. People even go as far as trying to get dealers to pay the state sales tax for them. You are still way off with your numbers.
MSRP = $43,000
Invoice = $39,000
half way point = $41000
less $5,000 factory incentive = $36,000
Can you get an Aero for less? Yes. Does $36,000 seem fair for a brand new 2004 Aero fully loaded and fresh off the truck? I think so personally. Used 2003 CPO models are selling for $30,000 to $34,000 in my market (DC area). Aged units are exceptions that should not be confused with fresh inventory.
