My WIS say transmission fluid change at 60K on a 2003.
It also say fluid capacity at change, 3.3 qts, you know what that means? They drain and refill, that's it. They don't go through and drain and refill and drive the car in between several times.
So doing it that way you should have the transmission fluid changed even more often since 3.3 qts is only less than half of the amount (7.6 qts) that the transmission holds.
Anyway, carmanufacturers of today want to show how inexpensive the car is to own for a certain amount of time and miles. By pushing service and fluid changes longer and further the cost of owning the car seems less (who cares about the nex owner anyway?).
Fluids have gotten better over the years, no doubt about that but still, a transfluid change every 30K is not overkill in any way.
Todays transmission are working really hard and the fluid can easily burn.
If you noticed, they don't specify brake fluid change either at 30, 60 or 90K but have that as a side note to replace every 4 years. That way they can keep the cost down and if the customer ask for that change as a side job, they really nail him in cost because it is a owner requested repair.
Coolant is not listed at all to be replaced since they introduced the long-life style coolant
It's all about bean counting and politics.
