BMW have claimed "filled for life" for quite awhile but they also have some shifting issues on certain trannies/models (late 90s/early 2000).
Many times the shifting issues can be resolved with a good flush and replacement of fluid.
It's difficult to do and best left to an indy BMW specialist due to that they don't have a dipstick or easy hole to fill through.
You drain the tranny and then fill it from the bottom in some way while the car is idling in neutral. Kind of messy if I understand it right.
Who knows, maybe the really new BMW doesn't even have any drain possibilities?
You never know from year to year what the car manufacturer changes, like when Saab dropped the drain plug on the manual 900 tranny between 1990 up, and then added a drain plug on the 94 and up 900/9000.
