My '93 3 series had no dipstick fill & supposed 'lifetime' fluid. To fill - you had to fill it up to fill hole on side of casing, while running at operating temp.
The car & tranny had 130k on them when I got it, pulled the pan to drain & refilled with amsoil atf. Tranny shifted like buttersmooth new after that. I was pleasantly shocked.
